Oakland, CA -- James Baldwin pitched a complete game in the Mariners first game versus inter-division rival Oakland, scattering five hits over nine innings. The shutout was preserved until Eric Chavez went deep in the ninth (his first of the year.)

Oakland's offense couldn't manage to muster up a hit with a runner in scoring position, and had a difficult time getting on base in general. "Pathetic," Graham said after the game. "We got slapped around by a guy whose ERA won't drop below 5.00." Chavez led the charge with a three hit game, his best game of the year, and David Justice and Scott Hatterberg chimed in with a pair of singles.
Seattle led a balanced attack led by Edgar Martinez (3-3, 3 RBI). Erik Hiljus took the loss for Oakland (0-1, 4.76 ERA) and the Athletics now drop to 3-2 on the season, behind a surging Seattle team that has yet to drop a game. The Athletics have a prime oppourtunity to try to take the series with Tim Hudson on the mound tomorrow, and Barry Zito following suite, but Eric Graham doesn't want the team to rely on pitching. "It wouldn't have mattered if we brought back Cy Young's post-mortem body back to life and threw him out there, we couldn't hit their starter. Offense need's to step up."
