ANGELS MAUL HUDSON, TAKE SERIES OPENER

by Clive Dahlton

Ana, CA -- Tim Hudson lasted just 5 1/3 innings, on the hook for the loss against division rival Anaheim in the first game of a three game set. Hudson gave up seven earned on 11 hits, walking two and striking out only three. "One of the worst outings I have ever had," Hudson said, standing next to his locker after the game. Hudson is now 2-1 on the season, watching his ERA balloon up to 5.03.

Chavez got the Athletic's on the board first with a two run shot to right, but it would be short lived as the Angels beat the A's 8-2 in the series opener. Tejada provided a spark in the middle of the order, but as it is becoming a trend this season, the bottom half was horrible, with Giambi, Pena, Hatteberg, Long and Hernandez going a combined 0-16 in the game. "We tried it once and it wasn't working, [the lineup], so we shook it up and it didn't go as planned," Graham said after the game. "We just flat out got our [expletive deleted] kicked."

Angels starter Ramon Ortiz was terrific, pitching a complete game, scattering four hits and only giving up the early homer to Chavez.

Barry Zito, (2-0, .60 ERA) looks to right the Athletics ship in game two.
