PENA'S SLAM LIFTS ATHLETICS

by Clive Dahlton

Seattle, WA -- Carlos Pena supplied all the offense the Athletics needed to scratch out a win in the second game of a three game set versus the Mariners. Pena knocked out Seattle starter Freddy Garcia in the first inning with a grand slam that cleared the centerfield wall by plenty. Pena also showcased his power in the pitcher friendly confines of Safeco Field later in the game, launching a gap shot that landed him a rare triple.

Tim Hudson (2-0, 2.51 ERA) was solid, albeit not dominating, pitching 7 innings, giving up 8 hits, surrendering 2 ER, striking out six. Mecir (0.00 ERA) pitched the 8th and 9th innings, allowing only one hit, striking out three and not allowing a run.

The Mariners got plenty of runners into scoring position, with help from John Olerud who smacked two doubles and proved to be the Athletics toughest out, however the rest of the lineup couldn't hack it, squeezing across only two runs.

Miguel Tejada is off to a scorching start, holding a .478 avg, getting on base at a .520 clip, and is hitting righties and lefties with ease.

Tonight's final score: Athletics-6, Mariners-2

Barry Zito takes the hill in the rubbergame looking to put the Athletics ahead of rival Seattle.
