MULDER, A'S, ESCAPE ANAHEIM WITH WIN

by Clive Dahlton

Ana, CA -- Mark Mulder (3-0, 1.50 ERA) delivered just what the Athletic's needed, eight innings of solid baseball. Mulder scattered five hits, struck out five and gave up only one run, a solo shot off the bat of Troy Glaus. Athletic's manager Eric Graham called the outing a 'turning point'. "I think this could be a huge turning point, we have not been playing well at all, our top two guys got shelled, so, to have Mulder come out and pitch that way was a big boost."

Miguel Tejada continues to rake, going 2-4 with a run scored, and one ribbie. His season average now stands at .472. He has six longballs (averaging a homer every 8.83 AB) and nine runs batted in. Tejada is hitting .462 against southpaws, and .481 against right handers.

The Athletics also got distribution down the lineup, with Ellis, Colangelo and Hatteberg getting on the scoresheet with hits. Appier was hit with the loss for Anaheim, lasting just four innings and giving up two earned.

The Athletics now head home for a lenghty homestand that features the Mariners, Angels and the defending American League Champions, the New York Yankees!
