LIDLE STRIKES OUT 13, BULLPEN IMPLODES

by Clive Dahlton

Oak, CA -- Cory Lidle took alot of flak for his first two starts, being considered a weak point of Oakland's vaunted pitching staff. Lidle allowed eight earned in his first two starts, lasting just a combined nine innings and only striking out three batters total. This evening Lidle went 7 1/3 innings, struck out 13 allowing three earned runs, and got a standing ovation and a curtain call at the Coliseum.

Lidle tried to flirt with history, trying to match what Roger Clemens did in Boston in 1996, striking out 20 in nine innings, but Lidle simply ran out of time. "Lidle was on fire tonight, I did NOT want to take him out of the game, but his pitch count was rising. I think if he stayed in the game he could have got 15+ strikeouts," Graham said after the game.

Lidle left with a 10-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh, in line for his first win of the season. Graham called upon the bullpen to close it out, and they almost cost Lidle a win. The Mariners struck for six runs in the top of the eighth, one in the ninth, and were an at-bat away from taking the lead.

Koch pitched the ninth, having not allowed a run to-date. He gave up three hits, walked a batter, and fortunately only surrendered a single run. Seattle had the bases chucked for Bret Boone, who struck out on three straight pitches. "Nerve-wracking," said Graham. "Lidle pitched his ass off for seven innings and the bullpen implodes."
