| Third Base Coach Ron Washington congratulates Hatteberg after a walk-off single |
Oak, CA -- Scott Hatterberg was maybe a bad at-bat away from being benched a few days ago, before Athletic's manager Eric Graham decided a lineup shakeup might find more cohesiveness on the field. Hatteberg was moved down the lineup in an effort to let him just swing the bat without thinking to much, or putting unnecessary pressure on himself. Hatterberg came up with several multi-hit performances, including a clutch hit turned triple yesterday that set up Terrence Long for heroics at the Coliseum, driving home Hatteberg for the Athletic's first walk off the year.Today Hatterberg got another clutch hit, winning the game in a dramatic 11 inning thriller. "The best win of the year so far," Graham said after the game.
Barry Zito closed the door on the demons that haunted him last start, pitching eight very strong innings, striking out five, allowing just an earned run, scattering five hits in the process. His opponet, Jarrod Washburn, was equally good, going seven innings, punching out two and allowing an unearned run in the sixth.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Angel's tried to add to their lead, sending Erstad home on a ball hit sharply towards Barry Zito. Zito launched off the mound picking up the ball, doing a complete 360 hurling the ball towards home plate, hitting Ramon Hernandez perfectly who barely held onto the ball as Erstad barreled through home plate, saving the potential game winning run.
The game went to extras, and in the eleventh inning, the Angel's looked to drive a knife into the A's hopes for a dramatic victory, with Garrett Anderson smoking a leadoff double into the gap. With no outs and a runner in scoring position, Graham made the call for Billy Koch, in a non-closer role. Koch induced two strikeouts and a fly out to end the threat, and the inning.
The A's had one more crack with the heart of their order coming up. Chavez struck out on a full count, and Tejada added to his stellar start, stroking a single into centerfield. Giambi followed suite, slicing a single over the head of Scott Spiezio. Long worked the count, resulting in a bases chucked situation for Scott Hatteberg. "I thought about taking a pitch at first," Hatterberg said. "I changed my mind when I got up the dish. 'You've been thinking to much lately', I thought to myself. Just relax and put a good swing on the first good pitch you see." Hatterberg didn't wait long, striking the first pitch into left field driving home Tejada for the Athletics second straight walk-off win. The win moves the Athletic's back in pace with Seattle, who has a division leading 11-6 record, with the A's just a game back.
The A's, coming into the series, would have been thrilled to come out of the series with a split with Anaheim, however, now they eye the series sweep. Mike Fyhrie will make his first start of the year, called up from AAA to replace the injured Mark Mulder. Fyhrie will duel with Anaheim's Kevin Appier, (0-3, 8.78 ERA)
